Mark joined the NHS in his 30s after leaving his household's organization without any official qualifications, however a drive to make a difference. He began as a psychological health support worker and went on to train as a general nurse. He certified at 37 and spent the next 20 years gradually climbing the ladder. He even returned to work in the same healthcare facility ward he was born in, taking on the function of ward supervisor. Today, he's the Associate Director of Nursing at Whipps Cross University Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust. ' I attempted to change off a bedside light and felt like something wasn't right with me. I understood immediately it was a stroke.' In July 2023, after an active vacation kayaking and walking, Bob all of a sudden had a stroke. He was zipped air ambulance to University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, where he invested 4 weeks restoring. 'I used the fitness center often and did neurorehabilitation online (NROL)'. NROL is a group rehab programme for people who have actually had a stroke or have other neurological conditions. 'I had a structured timetable which gave me something to look forward to weekly - socially, psychologically and emotionally.' Bob thanked NHS staff for 'the fantastic support' and the ongoing physiotherapy he received. Well done Bob and excellent work team! Early acknowledgment of stroke symptoms can conserve lives. ' Working together with nurses and seeing the distinction they made inspired me to believe, 'I could do that!" Meet Sharon, a sexual health nurse and non-medical prescriber who began her nursing journey in 1985 at the Royal Liverpool Teaching Hospital. In 2010 she joined Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust and continues to serve clients in Hertfordshire. 'I loved assisting people and learning more about the body, so nursing simply felt right.' Sharon reflects. Sharon has worked in male infertility, menopause, miscarriage and colposcopy among others, revealing the wide variety of locations in which nurses make a difference. 'Truly, I can't think about a location where nurses do not make an effect in some form,' Sharon confesses. On why her function is unique, Sharon explains, 'The care, generosity, and compassion we bring make the nursing function special. As client supporters, we help ensure their journey is supported, informed, and genuinely meaningful.' There are more than 50 various kinds of nursing roles offered in the NHS.
